Split a PDF visually — free online

Split PDF shows a thumbnail of every page so you can choose exactly where to divide the document. Click the scissors icon between two pages to set a split point, or use “Split every page” to save each page as its own file. The result is a ZIP download containing separate PDFs — free, online, and processed entirely in your browser with no uploads. Need to pull specific pages by number into one file? Use our Extract Pages tool instead.

How to split a PDF online

    1. Upload the PDF you want to split by dropping it on the page or clicking to browse.
    2. Review the page thumbnails and click the scissors between pages where you want to divide the document.
    3. Optionally click “Split every page” to create one file per page, or “Clear split points” to start over.
    4. Click “Split & Download” to build the separate PDFs and download them as a ZIP file.

Why use this free PDF split tool?

Splitting sensitive contracts, reports, or scans locally keeps your data private. No account is required, the tool is completely free, and it works on desktop and mobile browsers without installing software.

Use Split PDF in a reliable PDF workflow

Splitting creates separate PDF files from the page ranges you choose. It is designed for producing several outputs, unlike Extract Pages, which collects selected pages into one new document.

    When this tool is useful

Use it to separate chapters, divide a large scan into individual records, create one file per client, or break an attachment into smaller parts. Define ranges carefully and use non-overlapping ranges when every page should appear only once.

    What to check before downloading

Count the output files and compare their page totals with the original. A split does not automatically reduce image quality or file size; if the resulting parts are still too large, compress them separately after confirming their contents.

Private browser processing and practical limits

Processing runs locally in the current browser tab, so the selected document is not sent to PDF Online Free for editing. Performance depends on the device, available memory, document complexity and browser. Large or unusual PDFs may take longer or may exceed the memory available on a phone. Work on a copy, allow the process to finish before closing the tab, and review the downloaded result before relying on it.

    Continue your PDF workflow

A PDF task often needs more than one step. Use the related tools below only after checking the output from the current step; this makes it easier to identify where a change occurred. Organize PDF, Compress PDF, Password Protect PDF and all PDF tools.

    Choose ranges without losing pages

Write down the required ranges before processing a long document. Inclusive ranges such as 1–4 and 5–9 cover every page once; ranges such as 1–5 and 5–9 repeat page 5. Compare the sum of the output page counts with the original whenever complete coverage matters.

    • Separate one record per customer, case or invoice.
    • Create individual chapters from a manual or course pack.
    • Keep confidential sections out of the copy sent to a recipient.

    Split, extract or remove pages?

Split PDF creates several files from ranges. Extract Pages creates one new PDF containing selected pages, even when those pages are not consecutive. Remove Pages keeps the rest of the document and discards selected pages. Choosing the operation by the required output prevents extra steps and makes verification easier.

    Naming, privacy and final checks

Download and rename each part immediately so files cannot be confused later. Open every result, verify its first and last page and check that headers or page references still make sense outside the original document. Splitting does not erase confidential material from the source; it only creates new files, so store or delete the original according to your own retention rules.

    Frequently asked questions

How does Split PDF decide which pages go in each file? You set split points visually. Each part contains the consecutive pages between split points — for example, splits after pages 3 and 7 create three files: pages 1–3, 4–7, and 8 to the end.

Does splitting a PDF upload my file? No. The PDF is read and processed in your browser. Nothing is uploaded for splitting or storage.

Can I extract pages by typing a range like 1-5 or 3,7,10? No — this tool splits visually, not by typed ranges. Use the Extract Pages tool to type page numbers or ranges into one new PDF.
